a space for place
a space for place is a project which aims to address the sociological phenomenon of culture shock. Manifesting itself as a sense of anxiety, nervousness and alienation caused by the exposure to a new and foreign environment and/or culture, culture shock is something that individuals grapple with in different ways, and often the fear of making mistakes within one's new cultural and social environment prevents the fostering of sincere and open dialogue and cultural exchange.
Specifically within the context of the Rhode Island School of Design, one of the main questions that the creation and use of this tool aims to address is "how do we support and cater towards a student body of over 2400 students who represent 32+ countries and 35+ American states within one institution's campus?"
Developed as a card game, a space for place aims to explore how conversations through cultures can be facilitated, preventing the sense of embarrassment and shame that often comes with "not knowing how something works here."
